
Bulldogs Fall To Big Red In Cornell Classic, 72-59

ITHACA, N.Y. Despite opening up an early eight-point advantage, the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team was unable to recover from a 14-2 run by the home team in the first round of the Cornell Classic, falling to Cornell by a 72-59 score.
The Bulldogs drop to 2-6 on the season while the Big Red improves to 3-2 on the young season.
Rookie Monique Hudson netted a team-best 18 points for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Margaret Roundtree connected on 11 of her 15 points in the final 20 minutes, most of them coming in a seven minute span before being whistled for two quick fouls, resulting in a foul out with just over six minutes to play in the contest.
Dominque Hudson netted 10 points in the loss. Redshirt-sophomore Sherika Montgomery pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive glass. She chipped in six points.
GWU played the host squad tough for the first half and led most of the half, but the Bulldogs were outscored 19-4 over the first 6:31 of the second period, putting the game seemingly out of reach.
However, GWU fought back, slicing the deficit to four on two occasions, but was unable to get any closer.
After an early first-half surge that put the Bulldogs up 14-6 16:08 into the contest, the squad trailed at the intermission by three, 34-31.
GWU fell behind 2-0, Monique Hudson countered with a three pointer to put the team up. Early on it was all the Hudson twins as both Monique and Dominque found the bottom of the net often. Monique Hudson hit back-to-back three pointers for the first six points of the game for head coach Rick Reeves's team. Roundtree hit a lay-up before Dominque Hudson made an old-fashioned three-point play for an 11-6 lead. Monique Hudson then drg. GWU seemed to have withstood the furious rally and regained the lead on a lay-up by Montgomery. The game remained close throughout the rest of the half, bained another three for the Bulldogs' largest lead of the contest.
However, the home team battled back to make it a ball game, tying it at 15-15 on a three-pointer by Gretchen Greg.
But the Big Red finally gained the lead at the 2:30 mark on a jumper by Virginia McMunigal.
The Bulldogs regained the lead on a Pope field goal to make it 30-29, but GWU could muster just two more points the rest of the way as the Big Red took the three-point advantage at the break.
During the opening period, Monique Hudson netted 13 of her points while Dominque accounted for eight.
The Bulldogs shot just 31.3 percent from the field, including four-of-20 from behind the three-point arc. GWU also hit just 13-of-21 shots from the charity stripe.
GWU will look to end its losing streak tomorrow in the consolation game of the tournament. The Bulldogs will take on A-Sun newcomer Florida Gulf Coast at 3 p.m., in the first of two meetings this season between the squads.
