
Gardner-Webb Takes Sixth At WCU Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. The Gardner-Webb men's golf team finished the two-round WCU Intercollegiate with a combined score of 596, 28-over par, to take sixth place.
The Bulldogs were just two shots away from fourth-place participant High Point, who recorded a 26-over par, 594. Western Carolina won the event after shooting a score of 565, three-under par.
Leading the way for GWU was Immu Korvenmaa, who posted a two-round score of 146. After opening with a one-over par, 72, he shot a 74 on the closing 18 holes for his total.
Korvenmaa's teammate Blake Palmer tied for 17th after finishing one stroke behind Korvenmaa. Each had identical 74's on the final day, but Palmer tallied a 73 on the opening 18.
Andrew Rickard tied for 32nd with a two-round score of 150. Rickard opened with a 77 before swinging the club better the second day, notching a 73 on the final day.
Scott Wheeler's 153 allowed him to tie for 44th at the tournament. Wheeler opened with a strong 73, but came home in 80.
Jason Bell was the other GWU participant, recording a 163 for the 36-hole event. Bell finished in 79th place.
The WCU Intercollegiate was the last fall event for head coach
Tee Burton's team. The squad returns to action March 17-18 at the
Lonnie D. Small Collegiate, which is hosted by William &
Mary.
