Gardner-Webb Falls to UNC Asheville, 4-0

The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs fell, 4-0, to the UNC Asheville
Bulldogs Wednesday night in non-conference action. Despite the
lop-sided score, Gardner-Webb had many opportunities to keep the
game close but was unable to find the back of the net.
Gardner-Webb wasted no time attacking in the first minutes of the
match. The ‘Dogs pushed the ball up the field and were
rewarded a corner kick. Bradley Morrison sent a nice ball into the
box, but it was cleared out by UNCA defenders. Minutes later,
Miguel Pinzone received a pass near the box and fired a shot on
goal, but UNCA's goalkeeper made the stop to keep the game
scoreless.
The two teams traded shots midway through the first half with both
goalkeepers making saves to keep their teams tied. A series of
substitutions followed; both coaches trying to put together a
balanced offensive attack. Gardner-Webb seemed to find that balance
late in the first half with three shots coming from the ‘Dogs
in a 10 minute span; all of which sailed wide of the goal.
UNCA finally broke the scoring drought in the 36th minute when
UNCA's Alex Morrow scored his third goal of the season off an
assist by Daniel Bandoly. Gardner-Webb responded soon after by
putting together two late drives. Both Richard Godfrey and Sam
Dowell had chances on goal but both were stopped by the UNCA
goalkeeper. The score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
Coach Setzer made a change at halftime; sending T.J. Fox to replace
Dane Geraci at goalkeeper for the Bulldogs. Fox's cold legs were
tested out early in the second half. UNCA put together an offensive
attack and Fox made a nice save in the first minute of the second
half. However, UNCA kept the pressure up and added another goal
less than a minute later.
Fox made another save soon after the goal and started a Bulldog
attack the other way. The attack was stopped due to a turnover at
the midfield area in the 53rd minute. Seconds later UNCA went up
3-0 of the foot of Ryan Haupt.
Gardner-Webb controlled the match for the next 15 minutes, putting
together a string of shots by Morrison, Eric Asanin-Miroux, and
Godfrey. Despite the pressure and flurry of shots, UNCA's
goalkeeper denied all attempts on goal and held the ‘Dogs
scoreless. UNCA added another goal late in the match to win
4-0.
Although the match was one-sided, it aids in the preparation for
the A-Sun Conference Tournament hosted by Stetson next week.
Gardner-Webb is set to play Campbell in the first round of next
week's tournament where it will look to avenge the 3-4 loss to the
Camels earlier this season. The match is set for 7 p.m. on November
14th.
