December 01, 2007 | Women's Basketball
ITHACA, N.Y. The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team held a brief second-half lead, but turnovers plagued the squad in the 60-56 loss to Florida Gulf Coast in the consolation game of the Cornell Classic.
Although both teams are members of the A-Sun conference, the game will not count towards the league standings.
The Bulldogs stand at 2-7 on the season while FGCU improves to 2-3.
The story of the game was the turnover discrepancy. GWU committed 22 turnovers while forcing the designated visitors into just 10. FGCU tallied 14 points off the Bulldogs' miscues while head coach Rick Reeves' team could muster just six points off the turnovers it forced.
GWU netted 43 percent of its shots while
limiting FGCU to 35 percent of its shots.
Sophomore Margaret Roundtree finishing one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season after garnering a team-high 14 points and nine boards. For good measure, she swatted two FGCU shots.
Freshman Monique Hudson tallied 13 points while Dominique Hudson reached double figures with 10.
Rookie Ashley Falknor gave the Bulldogs a huge boost off the bench after the intermission. Falknor, who played well at the end of the first half, started the second half by drilling a three-point attempt after FGCU had gone up 32-25.
After a missed lay-up by FGCU, Falknor cut the deficit to two by making another mid-range jumper.
At the 16:29 mark, Roundtree powered past a couple defenders for an easy bucket, giving GWU the lead 34-32.
The largest lead GWU had in the game was four, when LaTroya Pope made a lay-up with 12:43 remaining. However, FGCU hit a three seconds later as part of an 8-2 run.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 46 apiece, but the team could never get over the hump as FGCU continually made wide open baskets to pull away from the Red and Black.
GWU held FGCU scoreless after the 2:14 mark as the Bulldogs trailed 60-51 - but the team was unable to put much together. Roundtree made a lay-up with 2:11 to play. The only other bucket the Bulldogs hit was a three-pointer by Dominique Hudson with 52 seconds to play. GWU was unable to get any closer though.
The Bulldogs trailed by four at the half, despite eight points by Roundtree and seven by Dominique Hudson.
GWU trailed by 11 with just 5:33 to play in the opening 20 minutes of action, but was able to slice into the lead by playing better defense and out-rebounding FGCU by six.
Reeves' team committed 15 first-half turnovers while forcing just five.
The Bulldogs return home tomorrow evening and will begin preparations for their Tuesday night game against Wofford at 7 p.m., in Paul Porter Arena.
