December 07, 2007 | Wrestling
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Redshirt-sophomore Rob Tate won his second tournament of the year last weekend, and was honored for his effort by being named intermatwrestle.com's East Region Wrestler of the Week.
Tate won the Davidson Open in the 133 lb. weight class. He opened up with a pin of Mike Nash just 5:39 into the first-round match, earning a spot in the quarterfinals.
In his second round dual, Tate took care of Spartanburg Methodist's Michael Slaughter with a major decision victory, 17-3.
Heading into the semifinals, he went up against Davidson's Alex Radsky, who won his two previous matches in dominating fashion. Despite the home crowd behind Radsky, Tate won the match by another major decision, this time by a 12-2 score.
In the finals, Tate recorded a 15-0 technical fall of Anderson's Chris Francis just 3:47 into the match for the title.
Tonight, Tate and the rest of the Bulldogs will look to pick up
a victory at VMI in the squad's first dual match of the season. GWU
and the Keydets will begin at 7 p.m., tonight, the first dual match
competition in head coach Scott Shipman's career.
