Coastal Carolina Holds Off Bulldogs in Men's Tennis

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Senior Gabe Veiga and freshman Evgeny Slesarev turned in impressive performances in both singles and doubles competition for the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, as GWU fell to the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina 5-2.
Senior Gabe Veiga picked up win for the Bulldogs at the No. 5 singles slot, as he defeated Coastal's Plamen Tzvetkov in a highly competitive match, 7-6, 6-4.
Newcomer Slesarev shined in his singles match on Saturday afternoon easily handling Simon Taylor of Coastal Carolina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Bulldog duo teamed up to win at the No. 2 doubles spot as well, defeating Elliott Quibell and David Mellis of Coastal 8-4.
However, the Chanticleers proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as Coastal took the doubles point and four out of the six singles bouts.
At the No. 1 doubles slot the team of Roberto Vasques and Taylor Ferrier were defeated by Taylor and Andy Caress of Coastal 8-1, while at the No. 3 position Kim Ellis and Grant Van Rensburg fell 8-5 to Tzvetkov and Richard Redding.
In singles play three of the 'Dogs four losses came in three sets as Ellis, who dominated the second set, fell at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. Fellow senior Vasques out battled and held off Quibell in the first set winning 7-5, but ultimately fell in the closest match of the day 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Van Rensburg got off to a great start in his match with Caress of Coastal, taking the first set 6-1. However, Caress battled back to take the second set 6-4, and then won the third set 10-7.
The Bulldogs (0-5) will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on the Wofford Terriers on Wednesday, February 14, at 2: 30 p.m.
