February 15, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Spartanburg, S.C. - Two of the three Gardner-Webb freshmen that competed on Wednesday afternoon for the Bulldog tennis team came away with victories in singles action but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell to the Terriers of Wofford, 5-2.
Wofford scored the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead as they swept all three doubles bouts. Wofford's Cahi and Stubbs downed the Bulldog team of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga in a close match, 8-7. The Bulldog tandem of Taylor Ferrier and Roberto Vasques also fell in their doubles bout, losing to Fridzon and Kernodle of the Terriers 8-5. At the No. 3 spot, Muthig and Collins of Wofford 8-2 defeated senior Kim Ellis and Grant Van Rensburg.
In singles action it was the freshmen that shined for the Bulldogs as Slesarev dominated both the first and the third sets to defeat Wofford's Kernodle at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Freshman Van Rensburg picked up the victory at the No. 5 spot as he dropped Cahi in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Newcomer Rafael Altmeyer saw his first action since joining the team in January, as he battled Christopher Williams of Wofford in a tough second set winning the set before falling in a superset tiebreaker 10-6.
The GWU men's tennis team (0-6) will return to Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, February 16, when they will face off with future A-Sun rival USC Upstate.
