Lady Bulldogs Hold Off Terriers, 4-3
February 15, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Spartanburg, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team put together four singles victories on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lady Netters felt the love on Valentines Day winning 4-3 over Wofford.
The Terriers took an early 1-0 lead, as the home team took two of the three doubles bouts to secure the doubles point. While the Lady Bulldogs picked up a win via a foreit at the No. 3 doubles position, GWU's tandem of Laura Kriett and Amy Beavers and duo of Jenny Gomez and Monica Walser couldn't pick up the other win to score the doubles point. Kriett and Beavers fell to Henry and Wetzig of Wofford, 8-6 at the No. 1 slot, while Gomez and Walser lost 8-1 at the No. 3 spot to Hodges and Smyers of the Terriers.
However, the Bulldogs did not roll over as they fought back to take four of the six singles bouts to pick up the close 4-3 win. Freshman Kriett picked up her first singles victory this spring season at the No. 1 spot, as she dropped Henry of Wofford in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Sophomores Jenny Gomez and Amy Beavers both got on the right track on Wednesday afternoon, as Gomez came back from a first set loss to defeat Wofford's Smyers, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, while Beavers defeated Carson of Wofford in a superset tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (6-2).
Also scoring a victory on the day was junior Carol Pancia who won via forfeit at the No. 6 position.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-5) will look to carry their momentum over to this Saturday afternoon, February 17, when they will host the Owls of Kennesaw State in both their A-Sun and home season openers. The match is slated to begin at 12 noon.
