Men's Tennis Falls to USC-Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Bulldog men's tennis team
got wins by way of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga in singles action
on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as USC Upstate defeated
Gardner-Webb 7-2 on the road.
Upstate improves to 3-1 on the year, while Gardner-Webb falls to
0-7 on the year.
Gardner-Webb fought valiantly in doubles play, but was unable to hold off the Spartans as USC Upstate came through with two close doubles victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso and Javier Tori claimed an 8-6 victory over the Bulldog duo of Gabe Veiga and Evgeny Slesarev at the No. 1 doubles position, while Sandy Franz and Leandro Osorio won, 8-6, over GWU's team of Kim Ellis and Taylor Ferrier at the No. 2 slot. At the No. 3 position, the tandem of Roberto Vasques and Grant Van Rensburg fell 8-3 to Upstate's Stefan Dumitrescu and Renzo Airaldi.
In singles play, Slesarev claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 position over Upstate's Tori. The win was Slesarev's second win in a row and his first win at the No. 1 singles slot.
Senior Gabe Veiga won 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot for Gardner-Webb, holding off Upstate's Arnaldo Lovera.
However, the 'Dogs could not pick up any more wins as Upstate's Franz defeated Vasques 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 position, while the Spartan's Gonzales-Orbegoso won 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 at the No. 3 slot over the 'Dogs Ellis. The Spartan's also scored victories at the last two slots as Jack Roux won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 position, and Osorio claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot to give the Spartans seven points on the day.
The Bulldogs (0-7) will have not long to rest as they will return to the Palmetto State tomorrow afternoon when they will face off with Division II powerhouse Presbyterian College. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
