Men's Tennis Drops No. 20 Presbyterian College, 6-3

CLINTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb
Bulldogs picked up their first win of the 2007 season on Saturday
afternoon defeating Division II powerhouse No. 20 Presbyterian
College 6-3 at Templeton Courts in Clinton, S.C.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 1-7 on the year and drops
Presbyterian to 1-1.
Gardner-Webb earned victories in all three of the doubles matches
on the afternoon, while the two teams split singles play on
Saturday.
In doubles play,
the team of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga
scored a victory at the No. 1 position, downing the Blue Hose's
Aaron Chapman and Matthew Martin in a very close and intense match
9-8. At the No. 2 slot, the
experienced Bulldog unit of Kim Ellis and Taylor
Ferrier held on to defeat Ruan Olivier and Andrew Lee of
Presbyterian College 9-8 as well. The duo of Roberto Vasques and Grant
Van Rensburg had it a little easier at the No.3 spot, as they
dropped Zach Glankler and Michael Nicol 8-4.
In singles play, the Bulldogs picked up three wins as Vasques
scored his first win of the young season at the No. 2 spot,
defeating Martin of PC in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Fellow senior Ellis played at the No.
3 slot, where he battled back from a first set 6-4 loss to down
Olivier 6-4 and 7-6 in the last two sets to pick up the win. Freshman Van Rensburg continues
to play well at the No. 5 spot as he defeated Patrick Fediuk of PC
in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
The Bulldogs will have a little over a week to prepare for their A-Sun season opener on Monday, February 26, when they will play host to the Ospreys of North Florida. The match is the home opener for the men's tennis team and is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
