JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Gardner-Webb men's track team recorded
a second-place finish while the women earned fourth at the Atlantic
Sun Conference championships, which concluded Saturday
afternoon.
Multiple conference and school records fell for the Bulldogs and
for his efforts, junior Jake Didion was named the Most Outstanding
Field Performer.
Jake Didion destroyed the conference record in the triple jump
with his school- and conference-setting effort of 14.29m
(46'10.75"). Dobson Collins garnered a conference championship in
the 60m hurdles in an A-Sun conference championship record time of
8.31. Erin Goodrum also won a conference championship for the
Bulldogs. Goodrum won the 800m with a time of 1:57.75, which is
just off the school record.
Senior Cody MacArthur earned a spot on the podium with his
second-place finish in the weight throw. MacArthur posted a mark of
16.20m (53'1.75"), establishing a new school record. Teammates
Michael Buckshaw and Matt Knippen also scored points for GWU.
Buckshaw was fourth with a toss of 15.12m (49'7.25") while
Knippen's effort of 14.90m (48'10.75") was good enough for
sixth.
In the triple jump, Davis also notched points for GWU with his
fourth-place finish. Davis had an effort of 13.14m (43'1.50").
Didion earned a fourth-place performance in the high jump, clearing
1.88m (6'2"). Alex Nimmo was fourth in the 800m with a time of
1:58.10.
The 4x400m relay team of Collins, Charles Steinke, Goodrum and
Didion were fifth with a time of 3:26.53.
Ryan McNeely's time of 7.49 in the 60m was good enough for sixth
place as was his time of 22.85 in the 200m. Paul Steinke posted a
time of 10.17 in the 60m hurdles, earning a sixth-place finish.
Earlier in the morning, Elliott Haynie, who won the pole vault
championship Friday evening, won the pole vault event in the
heptathlon with a school-record setting performance of 4.95m
(16'2.75").
On the women's side, sophomore
Kelly Bridges shattered the
conference championships record in the pole vault, which she set
last season. Bridges took home the title after vaulting 3.35m
(10'11.75").
Teammates
Victoria Argus and Merrissa
Hawkins were third and fourth, respectively, in the event. Each
cleared 3.05m (10'), but Argus took third because of jumps.
Senior
Katherine Warden was
crowned the 800m champion after finishing nearly three seconds
ahead of her closest competition. Warden crossed the line in
2:17.55.
Freshman
Kayla Morgan posted a
third-place finish in the triple jump with an effort of 11.11m
(36'5.50").
Michele Milner scored
points with her fifth-place performance in the 5,000m. Milner
recorded a time of 18:40.47.
Caryn Daane also tallied a
fifth-place effort, but it was in the weight throw. Daane had a
toss of 13.19m (43'3.25") while teammate
Elizabeth Maxwell was sixth
in the event with a throw of 12.78m (41'11.25").
The women's 4x400m relay team picked up a point for its
sixth-place finish. The team of Argus, Charlene McLean, Warden and
Abby Callahan crossed the
line in 4:12.87.
