Men's Tennis Falls in Spring Home Opener

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team opened up their home slate for the spring season on Monday afternoon, as they fell to North Florida 5-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Bulldogs found themselves down 1-0 early, as they lost all three doubles bouts to the visting Ospreys.
However, the Bulldogs tried to bounce back from the early deficit but were only able to pick up two wins in singles play.
Freshman Grant Van Rensburg scored a victory for the 'Dogs at the No. 5 singles position, as he easily defeated Glen Marshall of UNF in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Gabe Veiga's win was much harder to come by as he was able to come back from a first set loss to bounce back and win the superset tiebreaker 10-6 over UNF's Elad Gabay at the No. 4 position.
Fellow seniors Roberto Vasques and Kim Ellis fought hard, giving their competitors all they had at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. However, it wasn't enough as Vasques fell in a superset tiebreaker 10-7 to Eduardo Pereira of UNF at the No. 2 slot to fall 3-6, 6-4 (10-7), well Ellis lost in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 to Javier Ferrin at the No. 3 spot.
Freshman Evgeny Slesarev played UNF's Matias Sigal to a tough first set before falling 7-6 and then 6-2 in the second set. Junior Taylor Ferrier fell to Andres Monje of the Ospreys at the No. 6 slot in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The Bulldogs (1-8, 0-1 A-Sun) will return to action on Wednesday, February 28, at 2 p.m. when they will play host to the Bulldogs of UNC-Asheville at the Webb Tennis Complex.
