Men's Tennis Drops UNCA 5-2

Boiling Springs, N.C. - On Wednesday afternoon the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team defeated the UNCA Bulldogs 5-2 in the battle of the Bulldogs at the Webb Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs got off to a great start taking two of the three doubles matches to give them an early 1-0 edge. The GWU duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga won at the No. 1 spot, defeating Loric Hereson and Tyler Begg of UNCA 8-2, while at the No. 3 slot, GWU's other freshman and senior combination of Grant Van Rensburg and Roberto Vasques found themselves victorious in a close and back-and-forth match 8-6 over Joseph May and Rob Nunnery of UNCA.
In singles play, the 'Dogs would down the visiting UNCA Bulldogs in four of the six bouts. Slesarev carried over the momentum from the doubles bout, to win in straight sets 6-5, 6-1, over Mauricio Correa at the No. 1 position.
Fellow GWU freshman Van Rensburg continued his winning ways at the No. 5 slot, as he cruised past UNCA's May, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Gabe Veiga and junior Taylor Ferrier were not going to let the freshmen get all the glory, as the two upperclassman both won their single's matches in straight sets as well. Veiga won 6-5, 6-1, over Damien Snare at the No. 4 spot, while Ferrier picked up his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicholas Thuell at the No. 6 position.
The Bulldogs (2-8, 0-1 A-Sun) will have a week and a half to prepare for the Liberty Flames who will be coming to Boiling Springs, N.C. on Saturday, March 10, to face off with the Bulldogs at the Webb Tennis Complex. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
