February 28, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team dominated the visiting UNCA Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon taking two of the three doubles bouts and five of the six singles contests to win 6-1 at the Webb Tennis Complex.
The Lady Netters took the doubles point away from UNCA as they picked up victories at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The GWU tandem of Monica Walser and Jenny Gomez defeated Whitney Abbott and Leslie Smith of UNCA 8-5 at No. 2, while the duo of Kasey Ellis and Carol Pancia blanked Tania Mateva and Rachel Poole 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
Gardner-Webb carried over the momentum from doubles play to singles play as they won five of the six singles bouts all in straight sets.
Freshman Laura Kriett continued her success at the No. 1 spot defeating Leslie Smith of UNCA 6-1, 6-1, while sophomore Jenny Gomez turned in a strong performance at the No. 3 position where she cruised past Rhoney of the Bulldogs, 6-1, 6-0.
Not to be outdone junior Monica Walser scored a victory for the Bulldogs at the No. 4 spot, defeating Abbott of UNCA 6-2, 6-4.
At the No. 5 and 6 spots, GWU pounced on the visiting Bulldogs giving up only one point in the two matches combined. Beavers easily dropped Mateva of UNCA in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, while at No. 6 junior Carol Pancia shutout Sara Holland, winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-7, 1-3 A-Sun) will have off until Saturday, March 10, when they will play host to the Liberty Flames. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
