February 03, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team took on their second nationally ranked opponent on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the No. 23 UNC Tar Heels, 7-0.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-2 on the season with both losses coming to nationally ranked ACC opponents.
GWU fell in all three doubles matches on the day, as Roberto Vasques and Taylor Ferrier fell at the No. 1 spot, 8-2, while Gabe Veiga and Evgeny Slesarev lost by the same score at the No. 2 slot. Senior Kim Ellis and freshman Grant Van Rensburg teamed up at the No. 3 position, only to fall 8-3 to the team of Taylor Fogleman and Tristan Heinrich of UNC.
The Bulldogs did not fair much better in singles play as they dropped all six singles bouts. However, the 'Dogs did not just roll over to the Tar Heels, but rather fought valiantly to try to swing the match their way.
Ellis, playing at the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, fell to Benjamin Carlotti of UNC in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 2 slot, newcomer Slesarev also fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to Chris Kearney of the Tar Heels. Bulldog seniors Vasques and Veiga battled hard at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, before both fell and two sets, in what was perhaps the best two matches on the afternoon.
Ferrier and Van Rensburg rounded at the play for the Bulldogs, with each falling in straight sets.
The Bulldogs (0-2) will not have long to rest, as they return to action tomorrow afternoon when they will face off with Davidson at 1:30 p.m.
