Bulldogs Shut Out By Elon

Elon, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team found themselves in a tough non-conference battle on Thursday afternoon as they fell to the Phoenix of Elon, 7-0.
Elon took the doubles point from the Bulldogs, winning all three doubles bouts. The tandem of Roberto Vasques and Taylor Ferrier almost came away with a win for the 'Dogs at the No. 1 doubles spot, falling to Elon's Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn 8-7 (7). At the No. 2 spot the senior squad of Kim Ellis and Gabe Veiga fell to the Phoenix's Austin Fenn and Sebastian Bredberg, 8-3, while the freshmen duo of Grant Van Rensburg and Evgeny Slesarev lost 8-1 to Anuwat Dalodom and Gustaf Asplund at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play Veiga fought back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to push the second set to a tiebreaker before ultimatley falling 7-6 (3) to Elon's Bredberg at the No. 5 slot.
The Bulldogs Ellis played at the No. 1 spot, falling to Dalodom of Elon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while fellow senior Vasques was defeated by Elon's Schermerhorn at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-1.
At the No. 4 position, junior Taylor Ferrier was defeated by Elon's Asplund in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Slesarev lost 6-1, 6-1 to Gooch of the Phoenix, while fellow classmate Van Rensburg was downed in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 to Fenn at No. 6.
The Bulldogs (0-4) return to action this Saturday, February 10, when they will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face off with the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
