
Lady Netters Fall to Phoenix, 6-1

Elon, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team got off to a great start on Thursday afternoon, taking an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point before ultimately falling to Elon, 6-1.
The Lady Bulldogs took an early lead over Elon as they picked up wins in two out of the three doubles bouts to win the doubles point. While the team of Laura Kriett and Amy Beavers fell at the No. 1 doubles position to Deanna Bailey and Jenn Tucci of Elon 8-3, the other two Bulldog duos picked up the slack.
At the No. 2 spot, the tandem of Jenny Gomez and Monica Walser picked up a close win over Elon's Kelley Moore and Paige Kensrue, holding on for a 9-7 victory. GWU's Kasey Ellis and Carol Pancia picked up the victory at the No. 3 slot dropping Elon's Hayley Wahl and Whitney Butcher, 8-6.
However, in singles play the Lady Bulldogs came up empty, falling in all six bouts with three of the six going to three sets.
At the No. 3 spot Ellis battled back from a first set loss (6-4) to take the second set, 6-4, before falling in the thrid set 6-1 to Elon's Moore. At the No. 5 slot, Elon's Wahl outlasted Beavers, winning in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Pancia fought hard at the No. 6 spot, winning the second set over Francie Rudolph before ultimately falling in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-4) return to action this Saturday, February 10, at 11 am, when they will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to take on the Lady Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina.
