GWU Men's Tennis Blows Out Flames to Win 7-0

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team played perhaps their best tennis thus far this spring season, as the 'Dogs dominated the visitng Liberty Flames, winning all three doubles bouts and all six singles matches en route to shutting out the Flames 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Bulldogs move to 3-8 overall while Liberty falls to 3-5.
The Bulldogs, playing in front of a number alumni and former GWU tennis players on Alumni Day, took all three doubles bouts to take an early 1-0 lead. The duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot over Liberty's Jarda Trojan and Chad Simpson, while at the No. 2 slot GWU's experienced team of Kim Ellis and Taylor Ferrier held off the Flames' Sebastian Pena and Juan Reyes to win 8-6. At the No. 3 spot, GWU's tandem of Roberto Vasques and Grant Van Rensburg dominated Liberty's Fabricio Picanco and Luis Olivera, winning the match 8-1.
In singles play, the Bulldogs did not drop a single set on the day as they blew out the Flames of Liberty.
GWU freshman Slesarev won at the No. 1 spot, defeating Trojan of Liberty in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while fellow classmate Van Rensburg downed Picanco of LU 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.
Seniors Roberto Vasques, Gabe Veiga and Kim Ellis all cruised on Saturday afternoon, as Vasques dropped Simpson 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot and Vegia easily defeated Liberty's Reyes in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Ellis battled back from a slugish and slow start to win in straight sets over Pena, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot.
Junior Taylor Ferrier swept past Franco Valdez of Liberty at the No. 6 position, winning the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
