GWU Women's Tennis Defeats Longwood 4-3

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team won their third straight match on Sunday afternoon, however, it was no easy task as the Lady Bulldogs came back to win the last two singles bouts to defeat the Lancers of Longwood 4-3.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 5-7 overall, while the loss drops the Lancers to 4-5 on the year.
The Bulldogs found themselves down 3-2 with only two singles matches left, but found a way to win both the No. 6 and No. 1 matchups to defeat Longwood.
The Lancers took an early 1-0 lead as they swept the Bulldogs in doubles play, winning all three matches.
However, the Lady Bulldogs would not roll over, as they came back to win four of the six singles bouts to claim the 4-3 victory.
GWU's Jenny Gomez and Monica Walser picked up wins for the 'Dogs at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Gomez defeated Laura Simon of Longwood in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, while Walser won in straight sets over Longwood's Ashley Melson 6-2, 6-3.
However, the Bulldogs fell at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, as Kasey Ellis lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to Romana Bucur and Amy Beavers fell to Lexi Torrice at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4.
Down 3-2, the Bulldogs would pick up a win by way of Carol Pancia at the No. 6 position to knot the score up at 3-3 with only one match to go. Pancia defeated Brittany Huddleston of Longwood, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Freshman Laura Kriett would score the win for the Lady Netter's, as she battled back from a 7-6 second set loss to outlasts the Lancer's Elena Triebskorn and take the third set 6-3 (6-3, 6-7, 6-3).
The women's tennis team will return to Atlantic Sun conference play on Thursday, March 14, when they will take on the Fighting Camels of Campbell University at Buies Creek, N.C. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
