'Dogs Fall to Campbell at Buies Creek, 5-2

Buies Creek, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team returned to Atlantic Sun league play on Wednesday afternoon as they traveled to Buies Creek, N.C. to do battle with the Camels of Campbell University.
The ‘Dogs fought hard as both Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga continued their winning streaks, yet it wasn't enough as the ‘Dogs fell to the Camels 5-2.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-2 in conference play and 4-9 overall, while the win moves the Camels to 3-3 in the A-Sun and 10-7.
In doubles play, Gardner-Webb lost the doubles point as they dropped two out of the three bouts to the Camels. The win came at the No. 3 slot as the duo of Grant Van Rensburg and Roberto Vasques defeated Campbell's team of Sebastian Thesleff and Viktor Taune in a very close match 9-7.
In singles action, the ‘Dogs scored victories at the No. 1 and No.4 positions, yet it wasn't enough as the Camels took the other four matches.
GWU's freshman Slesarev won his fourth straight match at the No. 1 spot, as he came back from a first set 3-6 loss to dominate Campbell's Gabriel Delarue and take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Gabe Veiga scored his fourth straight victory at the No. 4 spot, as he defeated Campbell's Vasja Gorjup in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 controlling the match from the start.
The men's tennis team will continue A-Sun conference play this weekend as they will travel to Nashville, T.N. to face off with both Belmont and Lipscomb. The Bulldogs will take on the Bruins of Belmont on Friday afternoon, March 16, at 2 p.m. On Saturday, March 17, the ‘Dogs will do battle with Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
