Bulldogs Crush Bruins 6-1 in Men's Tennis

Nashville, T.N.- The Bulldogs picked up their first Atlantic Sun conference win on Friday afternoon as they cruised past the Belmont Bruins at the Davis Complex in Nashville, T.N. winning 6-1.
The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead over the Bruins, as they took the two out of the three doubles bouts to win the doubles point. GWU's Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga easily defeated the Bruins team of Alex Gillott and Felipe Abreu 8-3 at the No. 2 spot, while the ‘Dogs other freshman and senior combo of Grant Van Rensburg and Roberto Vasques downed Belmont's Ignacio Gesto and Zach Zola 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
The ‘Dogs carried over the momentum from their doubles play into singles action, as they scored wins in five of the six matches on the afternoon.
Senior co-captain Gabe Veiga extended his winning streak to six straight matches with his win at the No. 4 slot on Friday afternoon. Veiga controlled the match from the start, as he defeated Felipe Abreu of Belmont in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Like Veiga, freshman Grant Van Rensburg won his sixth consecutive match on Friday, as he defeated Ignacio Gesto of the Bruins 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 5 slot.
Fellow classmate, Evgeny Slesarev bounced back from a second set 4-6 loss to win the third set 6-1 and the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 over Alex Gillott at the No. 1 position. The win gave Slesarev his fifth straight victory at the No. 1 singles position.
Senior Roberto Vasques and newcomer Rafael Altmeyer also picked up wins for the Bulldogs on the afternoon, as Vasques won at the No. 2 spot over Javier Rodriquez of Belmont who retired in the second set after losing the first set 6-3, while Altmeyer cruised past Zach Zola at the No. 6 spot, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.
With the win the ‘Dogs improve to 1-2 in conference play and 5-9 overall.
Gardner-Webb will not have long to rest as they return to A-Sun play tomorrow afternoon when they will travel just down the road from Belmont to take on the Bison of Lipscomb at 10 a.m.
