Bruins Hold Off Bulldogs to Win 4-3 in Women's Tennis Action

Nashville, T.N.- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team fought hard to get back on the right track on Friday afternoon but the Belmont Bruins held on to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 4-3 at the Davis Complex in Nashville, T.N.
In doubles action, the Lady Bulldogs dropped the home team at the No. 1 doubles position, as the GWU duo of Laura Kriett and Amy Beavers defeated Belmont's team of April Bradley and Tatiana Pozo 8-6. However, Belmont would go on to take both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
In the end the doubles point would prove to be the difference as the two teams would split the six singles bouts. Gardner-Webb would win at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 spots, while Belmont downed the ‘Dogs at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 positions.
Freshman Laura Kriett extended her winning streak to three straight matches at the No. 1 slot, as she defeated Linda Johansson of Belmont in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Jenny Gomez battled back from a tough second set loss (7-6) to drop Belmont's Tatiana Pozo 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. With the win, Gomez remains undefeated at the No. 3 spot, improving to 5-0 on the season.
Fellow sophomore Amy Beavers dominated her opponent at the No. 5 spot, as she did not give up a single point to the Bruins Katie Rhodes, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
With the loss Gardner-Webb falls to 1-4 in the A-sun and 5-9 overall.
The GWU lady netters will look to get back on the right track tomorrow afternoon when they will do battle with the Lipscomb Bison at 10 a.m.
