Mountaineers Edge Bulldogs 4-3

Boone, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team had their winning streak snapped at four on Monday afternoon, as the Appalachian State Mountaineers edged out the Bulldogs in a close match 4-3.
The Bulldogs fell behind early as Gardner-Webb picked up only one victory in doubles play. The duo of Roberto Vasques and Grant Van Rensburg held on to defeat Appalachian State's Lee Floyd and David Doverspike, 9-8, yet it wasn't enough as the Mountaineers took the other two doubles contests.
Senior co-captain Gabe Veiga scored his tenth straight victory at the No. 4 singles position on Monday afternoon, as he defeated Peter Jacobs of Appalachian State 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Freshmen Evgeny Slesarev and Grant Van Rensburg both got back on the right track as each picked up a win three sets in Boone. Slesarev won at the No. 1 singles spot, dropping Trent Constance of ASU 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Van Rensburg bounced back from a first set 4-6 loss to win the second set 6-3 and the third set tiebreaker 10-6.
With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 8-10 overall.
The Bulldogs return to Atlantic Sun conference play tomorrow, March 27, when they will face off with the No. 51 nationally ranked East Tennessee State Buccaneers. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.
