
Bulldogs Win Inaugural University Cup

Morganton, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs captured the inaugural 2007 University Cup with a 10-3 match play victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Members of both the men and women's teams from took part in the unique mid-spring season event.
Each of the three singles matches were worth one point towards the team total, while the five four-ball matches, pitting a male and female from both teams against one another in a best-ball competition, were worth two points each. With a total of 13 available points in the competition, the first team to accumulate seven would be the 2007 University Cup champion.
The tournament begain with the three singles matches, pairing up a male golfer from Appalachian State with a male golfer from Gardner-Webb.In the first match, ASU senior Ronnie Christopher secured a 2-up win over GWU's senior Matt Renegar. It would be the only match Appalachian State would win all day against the Bulldogs.
In a battle of freshmen in match No. 2, Bulldog GWU's Andrew Rickard easily got past App. State's Casey Miller with a 7-up victory, while in match No. 3, Gardner-Webb freshman Sam Ransom bested App. State senior Adam Gerald, 2-up.
In match No. 4, the two squads battled all the way to the final hole. The Gardner-Webb sophomore team of Blake Palmer and MacKenzie Renner escaped with a halve when they won the 18th hole with a par over the Appalachian squad of senior Robert Quick and sophomore Mary Kate Bowman.
On the front nine, Gardner-Webb's Ryan Bell and teammate Katie Garahan built a six-up lead over the App. State grouping of Taylor Hines and Emily Cheves in match No. 5. It would hold up the rest of the way. Bell's four-under par 32 on the front nine was the difference-maker. The sophomore from Charlotte ended the day with a three-under 69.
In match No. 6 Gardner-Webb freshman Immu Korvenmaa and senior Claudine Foong battled to a three-up victory over the App pairing of senior Dan Gossin and freshman Jordan Kreuter.
Match No. 7 went to the wire. The App. State duo of sophomore Casey Johnson and freshman Brooke DeHart saw their match slip to all-square when both players bogeyed the final hole. The Gardner-Webb pairing of junior Geordie Hagerman and senior Lindsay Hermanson parred the final hole to gain the 1-point halve. Hagerman scorched the front nine at Mimosa Hills with a blistering 5-under par 31.
In the final match of the day (No. 8), Gardner-Webb's Joshua Philbeck and Yayoi Garcia pocketed a 3-up victory over App. State seniors Quentin Gill and Meredith Morrison.
Both the men's and women's golf teams will be in action in early April, as the men's team will compete in the Wofford Intercollegiate on April 2- 3, while the women will hit the links at the Tina Barrett Longwood Invitational on April 1-3.
