
Bulldogs Win 4-3 In Regular Season Finale

High Point, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team wrapped up their 2007 spring season on Tuesday afternoon, as they were on the road to take on the Panthers of High Point University in non-conference action. The Bulldogs, which were coming off a nine-day break from competitive play, held off the home team to win 4-3 and pick up its10th victory of the season.
GWU pounced on the Panthers early, scoring two doubles victories to win the doubles point and earn an early 1-0 lead. The duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga were victorious at the No. 1 doubles slot, as they cruised past High Point's team of Jack Notton and Jim Trussler winning the match 8-1. The other doubles victory for the 'Dogs came by way of the other senior and freshman GWU tandem of Roberto Vasques and Grant Van Rensburg who defeated the Panthers' David Perren and Henri Mangin 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, the Bulldogs were able to hold off the Panthers and score a 4-3 victory by spitting the six singles bouts.
Senior Gabe Veiga won his team high 14th singles victory on Tuesday afternoon, as he defeated High Point's Ben Deloume in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot.
Fellow classmate Kim Ellis scored a victory for the Bulldogs at No. 4 slot, as he easily defeated the Panthers' David Perren in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The win moves Ellis to 1-0 at the No. 4 position on the season.
Scoring the other singles victory for the 'Dogs was freshman sensation Evgeny Slesarev at the No. 1 position, who bounced back from a horrific 2-6 first set loss to defeat his opponent Jack Notton 6-1 in the second set and 6-2 in the third set to take the match. The win was Slesarev's 13th overall win of the season and his 10th win at the No. 1 spot.
With the win on Tuesday the Bulldogs improved to 10-12 overall, the most wins that they have had since making the transition to Division I in 2001-2002.
The Bulldogs will look to carry over the momentum from Tuesday's non-conference win to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament on April 20-22. The tournament will be held in Johnson City, Tenn. and is hosted by the East Tennesse State Buccaneers. The match seedings and times for the tournament are yet to be determined.
