High Point Edges GWU 4-3 in Women's Tennis Action

High Point, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team dropped its third straight match on Tuesday afternoon, as they fell on the road to the Panthers of High Point 4-3 in non-conference action.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early 1-0, as they lost the doubles point falling in all three doubles bouts. However, the Bulldogs did not just give High Point the point, but rather they pushed the Panthers to the limit at both the No. 1 and No. 3 contests. At the No. 1 doubles slot, the GWU duo of Amy Beavers and Laura Kriett pushed the team of Suzanne Celensu and Caroline Mount to the limit before falling to High Point's team 9-7.
Yet the No. 3 doubles match proved to be even closer, as High Point's Iris Schabetsberger and Sarah McDonaugh just barely held on to defeat the GWU tandem of Carol Pancia and Kasey Ellis 9-8.
Down 1-0, the Lady Bulldogs fought hard to make up the one point deficit but it would not occur as the two teams split in singles play.
Freshman Laura Kriett and sophomore Jenny Gomez each picked up their team leading 12th victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, as Kriett cruised past A.C. Talus of High Point, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, while Gomez also won in straight sets at the No. 3 spot, defeating Beccy Carr of High Point, 6-3, 6-4.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Amy Beavers scored her 11th victory on the year as she battled back from a first set 2-6 loss to take the second set 6-3 and the third set tiebreaker 10-4 to defeat High Point's Schabetsberger at the No. 5 spot.
With the loss the GWU Lady Netters fall to 8-13 for the year.
However, Gardner-Webb will look to get back on the right track and find their winning ways when they will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to face off with the Catamounts of Western Carolina this Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m. The match will be the regular season finale for the Lady Bulldogs before they will travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete in the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament on April 20-22.
