Warden Awarded 2007 A-Sun Post Graduate Scholarship
June 13, 2007 | Track & Field
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The Atlantic Sun Conference has
awarded Gardner-Webb University standout Katherine Warden with its
first annual post graduate scholarship following the league's 2007
spring meetings.
The scholarship is sponsored by the Atlantic Sun Conference's
Faculty Athletic Representatives.
Warden (Columbia, S.C. / Dreher HS) was also named 2006-2007
Atlantic Sun Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Year last
week, the league's highest individual honor. She is the first
student-athlete from Gardner-Webb to earn either award from the
Atlantic Sun Conference.
A star in both cross country and track, Warden graduated from
Gardner-Webb in May, 2007, with a degree in English. She will
attend Boston University on a full academic scholarship in the fall
to pursue a graduate degree in Divinity.
A true student-athlete during her time at GWU, Warden was at the
top of her game whether that meant wearing track shoes or
typing an essay.
As a runner, she earned All-Conference honors in track three times
individually, and once in cross country. Warden was the 2007 A-Sun
champion in the 800m run indoors, following up a third-place finish
in the same distance outdoors in 2006. She finished 10th at the
2006 A-Sun Cross Country Championships on her home course in
Boiling Springs, marking the highest finish of her four-year career
at the A-Sun meet and pacing the Gardner-Webb
contingent.
In the classroom, Warden's credentials were stellar, as she
compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her major field of
study. Warden graduated with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average
and was a member of the Gardner-Webb Dean's List five times and GWU
athletic honor roll eight times.
"Katherine has served as a student-athlete role model in both
dimensions of her tenure at Gardner-Webb," said GWU Faculty
Athletics Representative Dr. Dee Hunt. "The awarding of the first
annual A-Sun Post Graduate Scholarship will be very beneficial as
she continues to strive toward excellence as a Master of Divinity
student at Boston University."
Prior to her career at Gardner-Webb, Warden was an All-State
performer at Dreher High School in Columbia, S.C. She was named
South Carolina Class 3A Track & Field Athlete of the Year as a
senior.
"We are very proud of Katherine's accomplishments during her time
as a student-athlete here at Gardner-Webb, and these honors are
well deserved" said Vice President for Athletics Chuck Burch. "Her
excellence in the classroom and on the track serves as solid
evidence that an individual can perform at an elite level in both
arenas. She is a wonderful young person who has laid the foundation
for a bright future in whatever field she chooses."
