2006 A-Sun Champs Selected Fifth In Conference Preseason Poll

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team was selected fifth in the Atlantic Sun Preseason poll, as was released by the A-Sun office Monday.
There was no clear-cut decision among the voters, the league's head coaches, as first-place ballots were given to six different teams.
Head coach Tony Setzer's squad received 59 points, including one first place vote, for its fifth-place ranking.
Campbell, who garnered the preseason nod a year ago to take the conference title, was in a familiar role once again. The Camels were picked first, receiving three first-place votes and 88 total points. Stetson, last year's runner-up, also tallied three first-place votes and was second with 82 points.
Jacksonville was third with 75 total points and a first-place ballot. Belmont also preceded the Bulldogs, totaling 67 points with a first-place nod.
GWU was immediately followed by Mercer's 54 points, including one first-place ballot, for sixth place.
A-Sun newcomer USC-Upstate was seventh with 41 points while Lipscomb fell just shy of seventh place after tallying 39 points.
UNF was ninth with 26 points while first-year team Florida Gulf Coast was selected 10th with 19 points.
Last season, the Bulldogs were selected sixth in the league before earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and winning the A-Sun's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The team advanced past UAB on penalty kicks in the first round before falling to No. 9 Clemson in the second round.
On the preseason all-conference team, GWU's lone selection was Richard Godfrey, who was one of four unanimous selections to the team.
The Bulldogs have their only exhibition match of the season at
Appalachian State on Aug. 25 before opening the year at High Point
on August 31 at 7 p.m.
