August 14, 2007 | Wrestling
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Head coach Scott Shipman, along with the Gardner-Webb athletics department, has finalized the schedule for the upcoming 2007-08 wrestling season.
The Bulldogs, fresh off a solid East Regional Championship showing that qualified two of their wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the spring, have put together a tough slate once again.
GWU begins the season at three consecutive opens before its first dual match.
The Shipman era starts at an all-day tournament Nov. 10 at the UNC Pembroke Open. The following weekend, Shipman's team makes the trek north to East Stroudsburg, Pa., for the East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 17. After a week off, the Bulldogs compete at the Davidson Open in nearby Davidson, N.C.
On Dec. 7, GWU heads to Lexington, Va., to take on a tough VMI squad. Last year, the Keydets took a nail-biter from GWU in Paul Porter Arena, 22-20. The Bulldogs will then break for exams and the holidays before returning for a two-day tournament at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. on Dec. 29-30.
On Jan. 5, GWU will compete at the Wolfpack Duals. Two weeks later, the Bulldogs head to Hoosier country where they will take on Indiana and Air Force in a tri-match.
Gardner-Webb fans will get to see its team in action for the first time on the home mat on Jan. 23 when the Red and Black takes on UNC Greensboro. It marks the first of three consecutive home dates for GWU.
On Jan. 25, the Bulldogs host Campbell and Spartanburg Methodist College in Paul Porter Arena. Four days later, Appalachian State will face off against GWU.
The Bulldogs hit the road the following day, making a return trip to Davidson for a dual match.
In February, GWU competes five times, the first of which is Feb. 2 at the East Regional Duals in Millersville, Pa. A week later the Bulldogs take on Eastern Michigan and Clarion in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Valentine's day will not be a love fest as GWU seeks revenge on the Eagles of Carson-Newman College from a season ago in Paul Porter Arena. Last year, CNC pulled out a 21-13 victory in Jefferson City, Tenn.
The Bulldogs travel to Staten Island, N.Y. for a tri-match against Wagner and American International College Feb. 23. GWU wraps up its dual meet competition at home against The Citadel on Feb. 27.
On March 9, GWU will head to Lynchburg, Va., for the East
Regional Championships, where they look to again have multiple
champions for the NCAA Championships, which will be held March
20-22 in St. Louis, Mo.
