Gardner-Webb Plays to a 1-1 Draw in Season Opener Against High Point
August 31, 2007 | Men's Soccer
High Point, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in its 2007 season opener against High Point on Friday night.
Despite the eight shots taken between the two evenly matched teams, the first half of action saw no glory and went scoreless.
The first goal came in the 49th minute of play when junior Bradley Morrison received a pass into the box by freshman Adam Augruso and fired it by the keeper to put the Bulldogs up one to nil.
Not to be outdone, High Point's freshman Scott Rojo came through in the 80th minute of play when he received a long kick-off by Panther's goalie Corey Whisenhunt and sent a rocket into the back of the net from just inside the box to tie the game at one a piece.
Gardner-Webb did make a rally late in the game with three shots on goal in the last 10 minutes, but was unable to convert any of its chances. Striker Richard Godrey connected with a beautiful shot in the 85th minute that narrowly missed the back of the net, hitting the post. Regulation time ended in a 1-1 tie.
Overtime saw few chances for both teams. High Point and Gardner-Webb only managed one shot a piece in the first overtime period. The Panthers did add more pressure in the second overtime period out-shooting the Bulldogs 3-0, but their shots went unanswered. The final score showed 1-1 starting both teams out with a 0-0-1 record for the 2007 season.
Gardner-Webb goes on the road again this Sunday, Sept. 2
traveling to No.12 Clemson at 7p.m. The Bulldogs will be looking
for some payback after falling to the Tigers in the second round of
last year's Division 1 NCAA Tournament by a 3-1 score.
