Penalty Kick Gives Radford 1-0 Win Over Gardner-Webb Men

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford Highlanders used a penalty
kick to slip past Gardner-Webb, 1-0, in the first round of the 2007
Winthrop / Wingate Inn Classic.
The first half was a defensive battle between the Bulldogs and
Highlanders.
Gardner-Webb's defense showed great discipline during the opening
45 minutes, catching Radford with three offside penalties. Despite
13 shots between the two teams, neither was able to score in the
first half and wound up in a scoreless tie at intermission.
Gardner-Webb tried to step up the pressure at the start of the
second half. The Bulldogs had several corner kick opportunities but
were unable to find the back of the net.
Both teams played very physical in the second half, knowing that
only one goal could win the defensive battle – and foul calls
piled up.
Radford took advantage of a penalty kick in the 60th minute of play
for the game winner, with Franklin Elimbi getting the score for the
Highlanders. That chance turned out to be enough, and Radford held
on for the win.
Gardner-Webb will take on host Winthrop Sunday at 2:30 pm ET in
Rock Hill.
