Winthrop Tops Gardner-Webb, 5-1, Sunday In Men's Soccer Clash

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Richard Godfrey gave Gardner-Webb an
early 1-0 lead Sunday afternoon against Winthrop, but the host
Eagles captured a 5-1 win in the Wingate Inn Classic.
Godfrey took a cross from Bradley Morrison in the 11th minute of
action Sunday for his third goal of the 2007 season, a header that
put GWU on top 1-0. Winthrop answered to tie the match five minutes
later, with Saidi Isaac scoring on a through ball from eight yards
out.
An own goal by GWU put Winthrop up 2-1, and the Eagles added a
third marker in the 38th minute to lead 3-1 at intermission.
Defensive pressure by the hosts limited Gardner-Webb's
opportunities to catch up, and Winthrop added a pair of goals in
the last 15 minutes to account for the final score.
Gardner-Webb was whistled for 20 of the match's 29 fouls Sunday,
but managed eight shots (five on goal) in the match. The two teams
were evenly matched with five corner kicks each. Winthrop managed
nine shots on goal.
Bulldogs Dane Geraci and Sheldon Gordon were named to the
All-Tournament team Sunday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb will return home for its next match, hosting Alabama
A&M on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4 pm ET on Varsity Field.
