
Gardner-Webb Falls To FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. The Gardner-Webb volleyball team was unable to mount a comeback, falling to Florida Gulf Coast by a 3-0 score (19-30, 26-30, 21-30) Friday evening in its A-Sun opener.
The Bulldogs fall to 8-8 on the year and 0-1 in conference competition. FGCU improves to 10-1 and 1-0 in league play.
Senior Audra Harrison led the way for GWU, posting a team-high 11 kills while recording just one error en route to a .400 hitting percentage. Junior Bethany Martin had nine kills on a .348 percentage while fellow junior Heidi Steinebrunner also notched nine kills.
Sophomore Regina Feagin had 37 assists. Junior Katie Matykowski had a team-best 13 digs.
GWU fell behind 3-0 in the first game due to unforced errors before Harrison got the squad on the board with a kill. The home squad made it 8-2 on another attack error by the Bulldogs. However, Ashley Pridgeon's kill sparked the Bulldogs. GWU pulled to within three at 10-7 when sophomore Jessica Clayton and Steinebrunner stuffed Patricia Silva. The teams traded points before FGCU sprinted out to a 17-11 lead. The Bulldogs were unable to recover.
Game two was a barnburner, as the host school hit .500 while the Bulldogs hit .447. GWU had 18 kills to one error in the game while FGCU had 21 kills and two errors.
The Bulldogs took a 17-13 lead on Bethany Martin's kills, but the Eagles soared back to knot the match at 18. Harrison's kill tied the game at 20-20, but FGCU scored the next two points and would never lose the lead the rest of the way.
In game three, the teams battled to a 7-7 tie after Steinebrunner slammed ome a kill. However, the Eagles would score the next three points before GWU could score again. Down two at 10-8, A service error gave the serve back to FGCU, and the team seemingly took control of the game, pushing its lead to eight at 17-9.
The Bulldogs would not quit, pulling to within two at 18-16, but once again the Eagles took control, scoring eight of the next 10 points.
GWU will look to get back on track tomorrow as they travel to
Stetson to take on the Hatters at 2 p.m. The Hatters downed
Campbell by a 3-0 count earlier today in each teams A-Sun
opener.
