Gardner-Webb Drops 4-2 Decision at VMI in Men's Soccer

LEXINGTON, Va. – Gardner-Webb fell, 4-2, to VMI at Patchin
Field on Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's soccer
match.
Gardner-Webb (0-2-1) had a very strong opening in the match with
eight shots in the first 20 minutes. In the 22nd minute, Richard
Godfrey's first goal of the season gave the Bulldogs an early lead
when he put home a rebounded shot by Adam Augruso.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Keydets with four more shots
on goal in the middle of the first half. VMI finally struck back in
the 43rd minute when Wythe Horbal scored from the right wing,
giving him his first goal of the season and tying the match at
1-1.
Despite the late goal, the Bulldogs wanted the end the half strong.
One of their two late corner kick opportunities almost connected,
with a header by Guy Mbanyamsig missing high over the bar.
The Bulldogs used the momentum from the first half and struck again
in the first 17 seconds of the second half. An error by VMI goalie
Brian Sowell allowed Godfrey to convert his second goal of the
season and put the Bulldogs back on top 2-1.
VMI scored its second goal shortly after, when David Hill connected
on a one-timer from the top of the box to tie things up at 2-2. The
two teams would remain tied until late in the match.
In the 72nd minute of play the Keydets (1-2-0) went on top, 3-2,
when Tony Nweke scored from the top of the box. Nweke went on the
score again late in the match to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs head home for their first home match of the season,
where they will look to turn things around against visiting
Liberty.
