Bulldogs Run Past Asheville, Progress to 4-1 in Big South

Senior Miguel Pinzon scored in the 58th minute to boost Gardner-Webb to a 2-1 win over UNC-Asheville at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon. The win over Asheville marks the first road win of the season for the Bulldogs.
Asheville struck the first goal of the match in the 12 minute, but Gardner-Webb was able to connect on two consecutive goals, one in each half, to take the match 2-1.
Despite controlling the ball for the first 10 minutes of the match, Gardner-Webb made a costly turnover around the 12th minute of action and Asheville was able to connect on a shot by Bryan George to take an early 1-0 lead. The goal came after Asheville sent a cross in from the right side and George connected from the left wing of the box.
Seeing as they had controlled the ball well early, Coach Setzer and his assistants re-assured the team that their chances would come and to stick to their game. As it turned out, they were right.
Ten minutes later senior Jarrett Jackson sent a cross into the box, and Hefforon rose up and headed it into the back of the net to notch the match at 1-1. A couple of more chances were taken by both teams, but neither was able to connect and the match went tied at 1-1 into halftime.
Whatever Coach Setzer told the guys at halftime fired them up, as the Bulldogs put up three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Not long after, Pinzon was able to attain his third goal of the season and give Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead. The goal came after sophomore Adam Augruso sent a pass to the top of the box, and Pinzon slammed home a bomb from 20 yards out.
Asheville put up three more chances on goal, but Geraci proved to be a stone wall in the second half and sent every attempt wayward. The win over UNC-A marks the fifth win in seven matches for the ‘Dogs; four of five coming in conference play.
