Bulldogs Look Impressive At Copa Sparta Open

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Twelve members of the Gardner-Webb wrestling team traveled to Puerto Rico over their fall break to compete at the Copa Sparta Open and each member came away having wrestled very well.
Five grapplers took first place in their respective divisions while all 12 ended up placing in their respective weight classes.
Phillip Goodwin took first in the 66kg junior category while Thomas Knapp posted a first-place performance in the 74kg junior division.
Dustin Porter tallied a first-place effort in the 120kg open division while Dave Sweeney recorded a winning performance in the junior division of the 84kg weight class.
Wendell Wilson competed in the junior and open divisions while at the tournament. His effort in the junior division won him first while it helped him place second in the open division.
Kyle Baird's performance in the 60kg class merited him a silver medal in the junior division. Newcomer Alex Medved took second at 74kg (junior division) as did senior Cortney Roberts in the 60kg open division. Redshirt-junior Rob Tate garnered second in the 66kg open division.
Ryan Medved posted a bronze medal at 66kg (junior division). Travis Porter, also competing in the junior class, earned a third-place effort at 97kg.
David Pelsang garnered a fourth-place performance at 74kg.
The Bulldogs will continue preparing for their season until
their Nov. 11 bout at Liberty.
