Gardner-Webb Wallops Presbyterian, 47-21, Saturday Night
October 18, 2008 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Gardner-Webb's Philip Peoples ran
for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, and the
Bulldogs led 30-0 at the half en route to an easy 47-21 win over
Presbyterian.
Gardner-Webb (3-4) rushed for a season-high 321 yards and three
touchdowns as a team, and rolled up 514 yards of total offense
despite playing without starting quarterback Stan Doolittle. Senior
Devin Campbell played very well in the game, completing 14-of-21
passes for 183 yards and two scores in the first half
connecting twice with Dobson Collins to help the Dogs build
their lead. Peoples and Patrick Hall also punched in touchdowns in
the first half for Gardner-Webb.
The Gardner-Webb defense forced six turnovers, with Jeffrey
Williams collecting 18 tackles (11 solo), a tackle for loss and two
interceptions to pace that effort.
GWU came out of the halftime locker room and forced a Presbyterian
fumble, then capped a short drive with Ryan Gates' second field
goal of the game for a 33-0 lead with 11:23 remaining in the third
quarter.
Presbyterian finally got on the board with 8:23 left, with Brandon
Miley hitting Brandon Clark on a 35-yard wheel route to cut the
lead to 33-7. Gardner-Webb pushed its lead to 40-7 near the end of
the third quarter, as safety Daniel Cooke stepped in front of a
Miley pass and raced 72 yards to paydirt his first career
touchdown.
The Blue Hose sandwiched two touchdowns around a 34-yard Brandon
Jackson run in the fourth quarter to account for the rest of the
scoring.
Gardner-Webb finished with a season-high 514 yards of total
offense, but kept the ball on the ground for much of the second
half. In addition to Peoples' big night, Jackson had 78 yards on
nine carries and David Montgomery added 43 yards on eight attempts.
Collins had six catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns, with all
his yardage and scoring coming before halftime.
The Runnin' Bulldog defense was strong as usual with its front line
players, as Presbyterian tallied just 312 total yards against the
GWU starters (492 total yards on the night). The Blue Hose wound up
with 180 total yards and 62 yards rushing in the fourth quarter,
after GWU had gone to a defense made up mostly of third and fourth
string players.
In addition to Williams' 18-tackle effort, true freshman Jordan
Woods had a career-high 11 tackles, two tackles for loss a sack two
forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Lyndrez Leslie also had 11
stops and Dami Teniola had 10 both career-high totals.
Presbyterian's offense was paced by Miley, who completed 34-of-48
passes for 331 yards and a touchdown. Miley threw four passes to
Gardner-Webb defenders, and Presbyterian fumbled twice in the
game.
NOTES: Gardner-Webb's string of six games in a row allowing less
than 100 yards team rushing was snapped ... Presbyterian finished
with 110 yards (62 in the fourth quarter) on the ground ... The 47
points scored by GWU was the most by either team in the 31-game
history of the series, which started in 1970.
