October 24, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The prequalifying draw of the ITA Regionals concluded Wednesday afternoon, with Gardner-Webb's Jenny Gomez falling one match shy of advancing to the qualifying draw on Thursday.
The Gardner-Webb senior scored a big win in her first match Wednesday morning, downing N.C. State's Pender Sessoms 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the prequalifying draw.
Gomez came up short in her second match of the day, falling in three sets to MTSU's Andrea Herrera, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Gomez took the first set 6-3, but Herrera fought hard in the second set, taking the match with a 7-5 advantage. Herrera kept up the momentum in the third set and took it easily 6-1.
Despite the loss in singles play, Gomez still had a shot at a doubles title. She and Amy Beavers teamed up for doubles action Thursday morning against the #9 seeded team of Sierra Poske and Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest. The Bulldogs didn't fair too well as Poske and Kulikova won decisively 8-1.
The GWU team of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia also battled on Thursday morning against N.C. State's Diana Mortlock and Neils Barringer. The Wolfpack wasted no time in their attack and the Bulldogs fell hard, 8-0.
The Singles Main Draw begins Friday morning with Laura Kriett being the only Bulldog remaining in the tournament.
