Bulldogs Drop Match At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team dropped a match at Winthrop Friday evening by a 3-0 score (19-25, 16-25, 20-25) in a Big South Conference contest.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-19 on the season and 3-7 in conference competition. The Eagles improve to 9-13 on the season and 5-4 on the year.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Heidi Steinebrunner, who notched a team-best nine kills. Rookie Laura Wilcox notched eight kills to go along with seven digs and a block assist in the losing effort.
Newcomer Evan Moffitt chipped in five kills while Bethany Martin tallied three. Brittany Wilson, Jessica Clayton, Tamia Herholz and Regina Feagin each added two.
Feagin dished out a team-best 25 assists while also notching seven digs. On the defensive side of the net, senior Katie Matykowski recorded a match-high 14 digs. Herholz also posted double digits in digs, tallying 10. Moffitt added eight while Feagin had seven.
Matykowski tallied one of the Bulldogs' three aces on the night. Her ace was her 141st of her career, which shattered the GWU school record for career aces.
Martin notched the only solo block of the night for while Moffitt and Wilcox teamed for GWU's only block assist.
For the match, GWU tallied 35 kills, but had 28 errors in 124 attempts for a .056 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs gradually improved their hitting on the night. After starting the match with a -.024 attack percentage in the first set (11 kills, 12 errors), the squad posted 10 kills and 10 errors in the second set. In the third and final set, the Red and Black amassed 14 kills and six errors for a .190 percentage.
For Winthrop, Kelley Taylor had 13 kills while Shannon Sitzmann had 10.
The Bulldogs return to action on Oct. 31, as they play host to Radford at 7 p.m., in Paul Porter Arena.
