Bulldogs And Highlanders Play To Scoreless Draw On Senior Day
October 25, 2008 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fought hard for 110 minutes, overcame adversity, and finished its home season with a 0-0 draw against Radford Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
The Bulldogs now stand at 4-11-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the Big
South. The Highlanders are 8-1-6 on the year and 2-1-4 in
conference play.
Slated to start in goal, senior Kim Scercy was injured during
warm-ups, forcing head coach Kevin Mounce to call on rookie
defender Chelsea Hearne, who had played goalkeeper in high
school.
The Bulldogs' Angie Harvey tried to get the home team on top first,
rocketing a shot that was sent just high of the frame in the
seventh minute of play. Three minutes later, Radford's Caitlyn Roan
matched Harvey, firing the shot about five feet too high.
Hearne's first test of the contest came at the 14:34 mark. Latrice Lee shot the ball from 15 yards out and she gobbled it up without any problem, keeping the score at 0-0.
In the 23rd minute, Kasey Gladhill nearly gave GWU a 1-0 lead. After receiving the ball in the top left of the box, she pivoted, turned to her left, took two dribbles and rocketed a shot that was destined for the right corner of the goal. However, she was unable to connect as the ball went about two feet right of paydirt.
The best chance for GWU in the opening frame came in the 42nd minute. Senior Dara Goldstein had gotten past her defender and sent a shot to the right corner of the goal. However, Lisa Lubke was able to deflect it. The ball bounced to Bailey Stevens, who one-touched it toward the goal. A Radford defender blocked the shot, keeping the score at 0-0 heading into intermission.
The action stalled in the second half as neither team was able to get a tremendous opportunity to put their respective teams on top. Stephanie Benshoof's corner kick led to a header by Goldstein with 34 seconds remaning, but the ball was flicked wide of the goal.
Tina Frost and Megan Reimer fired shots on frame in the first overtime, but Lubke was able to prevent either from going into the goal.
Lauren Kelly took her chance from 25 yards out in the second overtime, but Lubke made the save. Hearne answered, saving a shot by McKenzie Vergara in the 105th minute of play, rendering the game scoreless in the 0-0 tie.
For the match, GWU out-shot Radford 17-9. The home team put seven shots on frame compared to four by the Highlanders.
Lubke finished the contest with seven saves while Hearne had four
in her first playing time in goal.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, Oct. 29 when they travel
to High Point for a 7 p.m. contest.
