October 31, 2008 | Cross Country
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. The Gardner-Webb men's and women's cross country teams are preparing for their first Big South Conference Championship, which will take place Saturday in Lynchburg, Va., and is hosted by Liberty.
The men's team is led by rookie Nick Kelly, who has been at or near the front of the Bulldog pack all year long. Helping Kelly will be the strong contingent of Erin Goodrum, Timothy Israel, Charlie Steinke and Justin Keziah who all have multiple years of postseason racing experience.
In addition to those seasoned veterans, Jacob Hoyle and Jason Wenzel will also be in the mix and should help the GWU team put forth a good showing.
After an early two-mile warm-up the men's 8k race will start at 10:30 a.m.
The women's group brings a ton of experience and depth to the meet as everyone returned from last season's squad that ran well at the A-Sun Championship.
Junior Abby Callahan is usually at the front of the GWU team, and could be there again this race. Beth Long, Carrie Minard, Diana Palka, Laura Scott, Rebecca Silleman, Bree Tharpe and Allye Littrell all bring postseason knowledge with them, and could help push the Bulldogs toward the front of the Big South.
The only newcomer that is traveling to the New Balance Big South Cross Country Championship is Elizabeth Glunk, who has been a solid contributor all season.
The women have a two-mile warm-up at 10:40, followed by the 5k race at 11:30 a.m. An awards ceremony for both groups will begin at 12:45 p.m.
