Jordan Woods Named Big South Freshman of the Week
November 10, 2008 | Football
CHARLOTTE Gardner-Webb defensive end Jordan Woods was
named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon by
the league office.
Woods (6-3, 225) had perhaps his best game to date as a Bulldog in
Saturday's 23-18 loss to Coastal Carolina. The former West
Charlotte (N.C.) High standout registered nine total tackles (six
solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and a quarterback pressure
to lead a pass rush that had a season-high four sacks in the
game.
Woods' tackling totals fell just shy of the career-best 11 hits he
had in a 47-21 win over Presbyterian (Oct. 18), but his pair of
quarterback sacks were a new career-high total.
One of two true freshmen starters on the GWU defense currently,
Woods now leads the team and ranks second in the conference with
5.0 sacks, and paces the Big South with three forced fumbles.
Woods' sack total is also tops nationally on the Division I FCS
level among true freshmen.
Woods has made 45 total stops in his freshman campaign (24 solo),
has 7.0 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and seven quarterback
pressures.
Gardner-Webb (5-5, 2-2 Big South) will attempt to salvage a winning
season when it travels to face No. 25 Liberty at 7 pm ET on
Saturday, November 15. The game will be televised live on MASN
(Mid-Atlantic Sports Network).
