Bulldogs Swept By Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C.
– The Gardner-Webb volleyball team was unable to overcome an
early 1-0 deficit despite battling hard as the Bulldogs fell to
North Carolina A&T 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 25-27) Tuesday evening in
a non-conference match.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-25 on the season while the Aggies improve to
7-22.
Leading the way for GWU was rookie Laura Wilcox. The six-time New
Balance Freshman of the Week posted a match-high 14 kills while
posting a .281 attack percentage. Wilcox notched 16 points on the
day after recording two aces and a block assist.
Senior Bethany Martin almost reached double figures in kills,
amassing nine in the match. The GWU career block leader added one
to her total with a block assist.
Senior Heidi Steinebrunner had seven kills while Tamia Herholz had
three.
Rookie Evan Moffitt dished out a team-best 15 assists while Regina
Feagin found GWU players 13 times for kills.
Senior Katie Matykowski dug out a match-best 12 balls while also
recording an ace and a block assist in the match. Steinebrunner and
Feagin each had eight digs.
GWU combined for four block assists, but Herholz notched the only
solo block for the Red and Black.
After falling behind early in the first set, GWU took a lead on a
kill by Wilcox at 807. The Bulldogs' lead grew to two on a ball
handling error, but a service error sparked a 4-0 run by the home
squad. It was a lead that was never relinquished as the short spurt
turned into a 12-5 run. GWU was unable to pull any closer as the
home team won 25-18.
Down 13-7 in the second set, a kill by Jessica Clayton's kill gave
the Bulldogs some life. As GWU slowly climbed into the match
through kills by Wilcox and attack errors by the Aggies, the
Bulldogs were never able to even the score. A kill by Wilcox pulled
the Red and Black within one, 17-16, but an attack error on the
following play gave momentum back to the home team.
Down 22-18, back-to-back kills by Wilcox gave the Bulldogs some
life, but a service error thwarted their attempt at a comeback as
head coach Chris Phillips' team fell 25-22.
GWU held a solid 10-6 lead in the third frame
as the Aggies committed three straight errors. The Bulldogs
stretched their lead to six, 15-9, as Wilcox had two kills and
Steinebrunner had one during the run.
The Aggies tied the contest at 16-16, but GWU regained the lead by
one. However, N.C. A&T ran off three of the next four points
for a 19-17 lead. GWU, though, never gave up hope. Facing match
point, a ball handling error gave GWU its 22nd point.
Steinebrunner posted two kills, tying the match. However, the squad
was unable to win the set, falling 27-25.
The Bulldogs will try to reverse their fortunes on Saturday at 2
p.m., when they travel to High Point for the regular-season
finale.
