Bulldogs Fall At High Point In Regular-Season Finale

– The Gardner-Webb volleyball team fell to High Point in
the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon by a 3-0 score (23-25,
15-25, 13-25).
The Bulldogs stand at 5-26 on the year and 3-13 in conference
competition entering the Big South Conference Tournament while the
Panthers are 25-6 overall and 13-3 in league play.
Rookie Laura Wilcox led the contingent of GWU
student-athletes after amassing a team-best 10 kills. Senior
Bethany Martin posted nine kills while first-year student-athlete
Lauren Evans tallied four. Evan Moffitt, Tamia Herholz and Heidi
Steinebrunner each notched three kills on the day.
Junior Regina Feagin dished out 26 assists while digging seven
balls. On the defensive side of the net, Katie Matykowski and
Herholz each posted a team-high eight digs. Martin and Jessica
Clayton combined for the Bulldogs' only block of the match.
Martin's kill gave the team a two-point edge, 14-12, before Audie
Gonzalez's error forced the home squad to call for time. The break
gave HPU time to regroup as it scored the next three points, tying
the score at 15-15. The squads traded points until the 17-17 mark
of the contest. Then, the Panthers went on a 4-0 run for a 21-17
advantage.
Head coach Chris Phillips' team countered by scoring four of the
next five points, getting kills from Wilcox and Brett Wilson,
forcing HPU to take its final timeout of the set. Facing set point
after two quick Panther points, GWU committed another error, ending
its chances at a comeback in the set.
HPU jumped out to a 12-6 advantage in the second set before GWU
called for time. Wilcox slammed home a kill after the break, but a
bad set gave the Panthers the following point. HPU widened its lead
to 10 after a 4-0 run, giving the home team enough cushion to pull
out the second set victory, 25-15.
The third set remained close in the early
going as Moffitt's kill tied the contest at 4-4. A 3-0 run gave the
home team a lead it would ultimately not relinquish.
HPU continued to slowly increase its lead, eventually taking a
10-point advantage at 21-11. A block by GWU pulled the team within
nine, but the team could get no closer as the deficit remained at
nine on two occasions while getting no closer. The Bulldogs
eventually fell, 25-13.
The Bulldogs will play in the Big South Conference Tournament
starting Friday at UNC Asheville. GWU will enter the tournament as
