Porter And Tate Remain Unbeaten, But Bulldogs Lose At Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. –
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team picked up three victories,
including one pin, Sunday afternoon at Appalachian State, but it
wasn't enough as the Mountaineers downed head coach Scott Shipman's
squad 27-12.
The Bulldogs are 0-2 on the season while ASU is now 1-0.
The contest began with the 125 lb. weight class. Cortney Roberts,
coming off a season-opening loss at Liberty, got things going in a
hurry for the Red and Black as he pulled off a 5-4 victory over
Bryan Rickar, giving the visitors a 3-0 overall advantage.
Just as quick, GWU found itself in a hole as Frank Celorrio pinned
Kyle Baird in the 133 lb. division for a 6-3 lead. Celorrio won the
match in 2:37.
Trailing 6-3, Rob Tate took on Mike Kessler at 141. Tate, who moved
up from 133 lbs. a season ago, picked up his second consecutive win
on the year by downing Kessler 6-2. The victory tied the overall
match at 6-6.
In a close battle, Kurt Wentink fell by a 2-0 score to Chip Powell,
giving the Mountaineers a lead they would never relinquish.
Down 9-6, rookie Justin Guthrie faced off against Brett Houghton in
the 157 lb. class. Guthrie was able to pile on nine points, but
dropped a major decision victory 17-9.
Dave Sweeney squared off against Kyle Blevins at 165 and kept it
close until late. Then, Blevins scored a 6-1 decision, giving ASU a
16-6 lead.
Jonathon Velazquez and Blake Salyer fell by back-to-back major
decision victories at 174 and 184 lbs., respectively.
In the 197 lb. class, Matthias Piasecki and David Pritz went
head-to-head in an epic battle. Pritz scored two points while
holding Piasecki to just one, for the victory. The win gave ASU a
27-6 lead.
Two-time NCAA Qualifier Dustin Porter took on Dustine Heiser in the
last match of the afternoon. Making quick work, Porter spotted an
opening and pinned Heiser just 1:03 into the match, making the
final score 27-12.
The Bulldogs will look to get in the win column against Anderson
Wednesday evening in Anderson, S.C., at 7 p.m.
