Bulldogs Take Down Anderson For First Win Of The Season
November 19, 2008 | Wrestling
ANDERSON, S.C. The Gardner-Webb wrestling team scored bonus points in four matches en route to a 27-16 victory over Anderson College Wednesday evening.
Redshirt-junior Rob Tate continued to stay red
hot as he picked up the Bulldogs' first win of the night via a pin.
Just 4:33 into the match, the 141 lb. dynamite took down Tony
DiCarlo for six points.
At 149, Kurt Wentink lost his second consecutive heartbreaker of
the year. Wentink, who lost 2-0 to Chip Powell of Appalachian
State, grappled well but still fell just short, 10-9, to Ron
Lofton.
Rookie Justin Guthrie came up on the short end of the stick in a
match against Nick DiCarlo. Guthrie dropped a 9-3 decision in the
157 lb. class.
At 165, Dave Pelsang was unable to overcome a strong performance by
Trevor Sanford. Pelsang battled mightily for the entire match, but
was outscored 10-5 in the loss.
Jonathon Velazquez, who had dropped the first two matches of the
season, was able to put everything together against John Hamrick.
Velazquez, competing in the 174 lb. class, pinned Hamrick in
4:08.
Newcomer Blake Salyer also came in with an 0-2 record. At 184,
Salyer had his finest match of his young career. Salyer not only
notched his first victory as a collegiate grappler, but also his
first pin. He took advantage of a mistake by James Hoyt at the 3:17
mark, earning the victory.
The 197 lb. class was arguably one of the best
matches of the evening. Matthias Piasecki, coming off a 2-1 loss to
Appalachian State's David Pritz, was on the winning side of a
one-point contest. Piasecki was able to knock off Luis Audelo by a
6-5 score, ensuring the Bulldogs' overall victory.
Coming off his first win via a fall of the season, redshirt-junior
Dustin Porter came extremely close to besting his fastest pin time
of the year against Jonah Adams in the heavyweight class. Porter
needed just 1:11 to discard Adams and pick up his second
consecutive pin and third straight win to open the season.
The Bulldogs head to the Naval Academy Classic on Nov. 22 in
Annapolis, Md. The competition is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
