
Laura Wilcox Earns Freshman Of The Year Honor

Gardner-Webb rookie Laura Wilcox was named the Big South
Conference Freshman of the Year, as announced by the conference
office Thursday evening.
Wilcox was named Big South Freshman of the
Week a league high six times this season, including four
consecutive nods.
She led the team with 315 kills on the season in addition to
leading the squad with 52 total blocks. The Normal, Ill., native
posted at least 20 kills in two matches, including a career-high 22
against Radford on Oct. 31.
For the season, Wilcox notched at least 10 kills on 18 occasions.
She has reached double figures in kills 13 of the last 14 matches.
The 6-0 middle blocker also registered two double-doubles on the
season. Both of those matches came in wins over Presbyterian.
Against Coastal Carolina, Wilcox stuffed a career-high five shots,
four of which were block assists.
Wilcox garnered seven top nods for 55 points, in front of UNC
Asheville's Cindi Miller, who earned 46 points and one top vote.
One of the strongest student-athletes in the league, Wilcox also
earned a spot on the Big South all-conference second-team.
Spectacular student-athletes were also honored for their work off
the court and in the classroom. Senior Bethany Martin was named to
the conference's all-academic team.
Wilcox and the rest of the Bulldogs will vie for their first-ever postseason victory Friday at 5 p.m., when the squad takes on Liberty in the Big South Conference Tournament.
