
Gardner-Webb Takes 10th At Naval Academy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Gardner-Webb's Dustin Porter took third place at the Naval Academy Classic while Rob Tate posted a sixth-place effort as the Gardner-Webb wrestling team took 10th at the coveted event.
Porter, the No. 3 seed, downed Navy's Joe Beraux 5-1 in the opening round match before disposing of Hunter Manspile by way of fall 2:01 into the match in the quarterfinals.
Porter then lost a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Duke's Konrad Dudziak in the semifinals, forcing him to the consolation bracket.
Once there, Porter downed Joe Sheffield of UNC Greensboro with another pin 3:41 into the contest, sending him to the consolation finals. Porter then had to square off against David Marone of Virginia Tech, where he won a 3-2 match for third place at the 285 lb. division.
GWU's other top competitor on the day was redshirt-junior Rob Tate. Tate, who grappled at 141 lbs., earned the fifth seed. He earned a bye in the first round before easily disposing of Campbell's Ethan Carmody with a technical fall, 15-0, in the second round.
Tate remained hot, using a 10-4 run to defeat Navy's Matt Pagan 10-4, sending him to the semifinals. There, he lost to top-seeded Chris Bencivenga, putting him in the consolation bracket.
Once there, He lost to Kelin Bidelspach of Campbell, putting him in the fifth-place match. He was unable to defeat Adam Healey for fifth, as he finished sixth.
The duo, with the rest of the Bulldogs, return to action Dec. 4
against VMI. The match is the first of the year in Paul Porter
Arena.
