Bulldogs End Season With Loss To Top-Seeded Coastal Carolina
November 06, 2008 | Women's Soccer
HIGH POINT, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team put up a solid fight Thursday afternoon, but dropped a 3-0 contest to No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Big South Women's Soccer Championship.
The Bulldogs end the season with a 4-13-2 record while Coastal Carolina improves to 12-6-1 on the year.
Dara Goldstein rocketed a shot at the 3:05 mark that hit the crossbar and bounced away harmlessly as she nearly put the eighth seed on top. After that, it was tough for the Bulldogs to get a shot off the remainder of the half.
GWU fell behind by a 2-0 score just 18:43 into the contest and was unable to recover despite having some superb opportunities to get on the scoreboard in its first-ever Big South postseason match.
Anna Tupy was on the receiving end from an Emily McColl pass at the 10:56 mark and promptly played the ball into the far right corner, out of the reach of GWU keeper Jessica Tuggle, from 25 yards out, giving the designated home team a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.
Tupy attempted to net her second goal the following minute, but her header sailed just wide of the frame. McColl shot wide in the 16th minute and 1:18 later Ashleigh Gunning's ball was also wide of the goal. In the 19th minute, Gunning was able to connect for her ninth goal of the season. Tuggle was unable to clear the ball after not getting a solid leg behind her clear attempt and it went straight to Gunning, who banged the ball home with an open goal for a 2-0 advantage.
Gunning connected for her second goal of the night 10 minutes into the second stanza. Gunning got the ball and dribbled across the top of the box before hitting a shot into the top corner for a 3-0 lead.
At that point, head coach Kevin Mounce and his staff inserted
Chelsea Hearne in goal for the final 34:38. Hearne was forced into
the keeper spot on Senior Day against Radford due to injuries and
prior commitments. Against the Highlanders, she played perfect for
110 minutes as the Bulldogs tied Radford 0-0.
Senior Cristin Yasinsac's attempt in the 86th minute was scooped up by Coastal's Karen Pavlick, keeping the Runnin' Bulldogs off the board. With just 1:16 to play, Goldstein sent a screaming shot toward the back of the net, but once again Pavlick was up to the challenge.
For the match, Coastal Carolina registered 31 shots to seven by GWU. The top seed posted 16 shots on goal while the Bulldogs had just four on frame.
Tuggle had seven saves in the loss while Hearne played a perfect
34:38 while picking up six saves. Hearne kept opponents scoreless
for 144:38 this season.
Each team had three corner kicks while Coastal was whistled for 15
fouls. GWU was called for eight.
