Tough Road Trip for Wrestling

The Gardner-Webb wrestling team dropped back-to-back matches
Wednesday night, falling 42-3 to UT Chattanooga and 28-18 to
Cumberland College.
The night began with Gardner-Webb facing off against a highly
touted UT Chattanooga squad. The Mocs led the series between the
two institutions with a 4-0 record over Gardner-Webb, and defeated
the Bulldogs 46-6 in their last meeting on Jan. 21st of 2007.
Wednesday night's match didn't prove to be much different as UTC
took nine of the ten matches for a 42-3 victory.
UTC won the first nine matchups of the night, recording four pins
in that span. Red-shirt junior Dustin Porter was the lone Bulldog
to record a win vs. UTC. Recently ranked #33 in the nation at
heavy-weight amongst all NCAA division I schools by
wrestlingreport.com, Porter won a 7-1 decision to extend his
winning-streak to four matches and bring his overall record to 9-1
this season.
In its later match, Gardner-Webb squared off with Cumberland
College. Again, the Bulldogs struggled in the lighter
weight-classes, dropping the first six of seven. The only win for
the Bulldogs in that span was a forfeit by Cumberland at the 149
lb. class, declaring Austin Reece the winner.
Cumberland held a 28-6 lead heading into the last three matches of
the night, making it mathematically impossible for the Bulldogs to
pick up the win. But despite the score, the remaining Bulldogs
fought hard.
Jonathon Velasquez won his match 8-5 at 184, followed by a 6-1 win
by Travis Porter at 197. Dustin Porter ended the night for the
‘Dogs with a pin at the 4:34 mark in the first period. The
win excelled his streak to five matches and takes him to 10-1
overall.
The late heroics weren't enough, but it did make the score look a
little less lop-sided with Cumberland taking the win 28-18.
